Connect Google Drive
Open Settings → General → Backup, then choose Connect Google Drive. You can use a different Google account from the one you use to sign in to Riikee. Allow Riikee to access the files it creates; it does not request access to every file in your Drive.
Your first backup is queued as soon as you connect. It includes every saved, non-deleted Writing in your account, including drafts. You can close Settings while it runs.
- Check the connected Google account and the time of the last completed backup in Settings.
- Choose Back up now when you want to queue another backup without waiting for the next automatic run.
- Choose Open backup folder to view the files in Google Drive.
What Riikee saves
Riikee creates a Riikee Backups folder with monthly folders such as 2026-09. Writings are stored directly inside their original month as Title.md. Older versions use Title-history-YYYYMMDD-version.md; the short version suffix distinguishes changes made on the same day. Matching filenames get a short identifier.
Embedded JPEG, PNG, WebP, and GIF images are copied into the same month folder. Download the entire month folder to keep relative image links working offline.
Backups use Markdown, so they preserve the content and common formatting rather than reproducing the editor pixel for pixel. Unsaved browser edits, Clips, and other account data are not included.
How automatic backup works
After a backup finishes, Riikee schedules the next one for about 24 hours later. The exact start time can vary while work waits in the background queue.
The first backup creates one Markdown file. When a Writing changes, the next backup saves the previous content as a history file and updates the current file. Renaming a Writing updates its filename; editing an older Writing keeps it in its original month.
This is a one-way backup. Changes made in Google Drive do not return to Riikee. If you edit the current file in Drive, Riikee saves that content as a history file before replacing it during a later backup.
Disconnect or change accounts
Choose Disconnect to stop automatic backups and remove the Google connection from Riikee. Existing files stay in Google Drive. Deleting a Writing or your Riikee account also does not delete files that have already been backed up.
Reconnect without disconnecting when Riikee asks you to authorize the same account again; this keeps the existing folder and progress. To use another Google account, disconnect first. Connecting again after a disconnect creates a new Riikee Backups folder and leaves the old one unchanged.
Fix a backup that needs attention
- If Riikee asks you to reconnect, authorize Google Drive again and allow access to files created by Riikee.
- If Drive is full, free up space and choose Back up now.
- If a backup file or folder is missing, restore it from Google Drive trash and retry. You can also disconnect and reconnect to begin a new backup archive.
- If an article or image cannot be backed up, check that its images are available and use JPEG, PNG, WebP, or GIF files no larger than 10 MB. A single Writing can include up to 100 images and 4 MB of article content.
